Step 5 - Read God's Word

The Importance of Bible reading

It takes less than 10 minutes a day to read through the entire Bible in a year. There are about 775,000 words in the Bible. Divided by 365, that’s 2,123 words a day. The average person reads 200 to 250 words per minute. So 2,123 words/day divided by225 words/minute equals 9.4 minutes a day. If you want to listen to a narrator read the Bible (there are lots of ways to do this free online), they are usually about 75 hours long total, which means at 12 minutes a day you can listen to the whole Bible in a year.

It sounds so simple, but reality has proven to most of us that it is very hard. How many of us have begun a Bible reading plan, started out fine, but stumbled along the way and did not finish? How many New Year’s Resolutions, begun so strongly in January, hit February and fizzled out? In truth, faithfulness in spiritual disciplines is rare among us. Few are they who regularly, consistently spend time with the Lord in Bibler eading and prayer daily, spend time in fellowship with a small group weekly, and give monthly of our treasures to the Lord in tithes and offerings. And what is the result? We are weak in faith, lacking hope, isolated and vulnerable. And why do we choose to live this way? Do we really believe that…

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

We need to be those committed to the Lord, reading his Word regularly, drawing spiritual sustenance from God himself and not just from this or that teacher or preacher we listen to regularly. And if you will do this, you will have spiritual resources to resist temptation and make wise decisions and strength to face life challenges and God’s comfort when you’re discouraged and truth to share with the lost.

So start today. Start here. Start now. Download a copy of Walking in the Word and begin reading God's Word. This five-day per week plan will help you immensely, as it has two days per week built in as make-up days for those time when life get's busy or distracted.
